A documentalist by training, Benoît Luisière collects family photos. Not his own: those of others. With a particular interest in their inexhaustible repetitions, his attention quickly turned to what one glimpses in this family ritual without ever naming it: the staging of a fiction, by small agreed lies. "When I believe I am this one, you see me as that one. Could there be as many 'I's as there are 'You's? To this question I imagine probable answers and certain misunderstandings. What is truly constant in identity, if not its eternal (de)(re)construction? Family photos are my little theatres of glossy paper, in which both Me and Other, a hybrid and transitory character, play 'the hypothesis of the self'. Am I really this Unknown? I hesitate. I superimpose and assemble fragments of anonymous faces with my own. Thanks to these 'cuttings' I put to the test a distant certainty, that of really being the one represented in the picture. We only perceive images or reflections of ourselves. So how not to be mistaken from time to time? I shuffle the cards of the family fiction by inviting myself, by anachronism, to rub shoulders with the one I was. He could be my son, but it is me. And for the same reasons he cannot be my father, since it is me."
