His real name was Robert Ducasse; we kept calling him Kari, as we did in the Latin Quarter before the war. He belonged to a group of talented young students, some entering Polytechnique, others Normale Supérieure, the Ponts or Centrale, young officers at the war's start who all later found each other in the Resistance. Our friend Kari, an engineer and naval officer, son of a pastor in Dieuze, Moselle, ended up with his family in the Gard after the collapse; a tall, silent, athletic, somewhat mysterious young man even to those close to him, he had shared in all our student adventures, kayaking the Tarn gorges or climbing the snowy peaks of the Queyras on sealskins, and took wonderful photographs, yet kept secret gardens we could never explore.
