poem by John Ashbery

In 2015 the painter Cynthia Daignault and the photographer Curran Hatleberg, a couple living on opposite coasts, each got in a car and drove toward the other, leaving at the same moment, following the same route, staying in the same motels and shooting with identical cameras, until they met at the geographic centre of the United States, Lebanon, Kansas, before continuing on alone. Somewhere Someone documents that crossing in 160 black-and-white photographs, printed as a long accordion-fold book that pairs Daignault's eastward journey against Hatleberg's westward one - a quiet meditation on the solitude of subjectivity, in which two people can pass the same landmarks and never see the same thing.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
