In December 1972 Melissa Shook (1939–2020) began a series of daily self-portraits in her Lower East Side apartment and continued it until August 1973. The complete series of 192 pictures is published here together for the first time. Working in medium format black and white against a white wall near the front windows of the living room, Shook photographed herself in a range of poses, building a fuller portrait than any single image could achieve; her daughter and the friends who filled her life often appear in the frame. "It was important to let my unconscious, rather than my intellect, dictate the progression," she said.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
