Known as an architect, town planner and designer, Charlotte Perriand also opened a photographic parenthesis between the 1920s and the 1940s. Her intuitive practice — at times militant, at times experimental — expresses her idea of modernity: inspired by nature and centred on the human being. She belongs among the "non-photographers" who helped make the image a powerful universal language. Working for herself, she recorded whatever struck her attention: a known or unknown face, a mushroom, a bone, cows in a meadow, fragments of Greek architecture, and the vast photomontages she assembled for the Paris International Exhibition of 1937.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
