In a time when those who lived through it will soon have perished, one possible route for commemoration is a return to pictures, asking what testimony they can give. This book seeks to answer the question of how images can bear witness, by examining them as multifaceted entities produced, reproduced and resituated in conflicting political and historical situations. Through a reading of three works that reinterpret archival material and position it in a new time and context, the argument seeks to explicate this relation and unfold the implications of that movement. In the three archive-based films discussed, the material is reactivated and reinterpreted, reworked visually and aurally. The footage discussed is understood as incomplete, like individual accounts dependent on context. Material produced as internal propaganda and the recording of a politically charged trial in the aftermath now mean something else. Photographic pictures, moving or still, are bound to their contexts and conditions of production and presentation. The argument is therefore that testimony can be grasped through archival conditions, context and framework, and means of representation: voice, narration and gaze.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
