Conversation between Karin Mamma Andersson and Martina Hoogland Ivanow
Design by Sandberg & Timonen

Comprises three volumes representing two earlier projects and a third, new book. In the second project (2010-2014) an often artificial and contradictory relationship with the wild is examined, a relationship largely about control. Like the first project (2009-10), it proceeds from a longing for the authentic that is fundamental to many subcultures that, to a greater or lesser degree, distance themselves from urban living. An interest in what is complex and contradictory runs like a common thread through the work, in which the process becomes an investigation into a dualistic condition and how the self relates to the outside world. The third volume includes an accompanying essay and a conversation with a painter, and provides an entry point into the process as well as very specific views on the medium.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
