Alpine ice fields and those on a northern island have been melting away slowly for decades, and global warming has drastically increased the speed of retreat in recent years. An early twentieth century geophysicist carried out the first survey of a local ice field and led important scientific expeditions to the north. An artist and a photographer joined a research campaign investigating the current state of the northern ice in 2018. The prints and photographs they produced reflect intense awareness of scientific facts, yet strike the viewer emotionally and aesthetically, blending the essence of geophysical research with contemporary practice.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
