Longlist, German Photo Book Prize 20/21

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, a whole generation of students was in search of the 'new.' In 1981, this artist left her native country, setting off on a road trip across America with a medium-format camera, a 35mm camera, and a Polaroid, adding a multitude of cheap cameras along the way that enabled snapshot-like pictures taken unselfconsciously whenever a motif sprang at her. The pictures reflect a direct and unrestrained manner, telling of immediate sensual experience and the longing for freedom and independence. Decades later, she revisited the vast collection, and the selection made for this new book reveals a consistent artistic perspective.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
