The book now available, titled “(un)known. Views of Salzburg”, is the contemporary supplement to the joint exhibition project of historical photographs from the collection of the “Salzburg Museum”, which was shown in the FOTOHOF>GALLERY from December 2024 to the end of January 2025. “The complementary nature of the publication is explained by the concept of the overall project: While the exhibition Unknown exclusively features historical photographs from the museum's collection, the book primarily contains current contributions from a total of 40 artists. In early 2024, these artists were invited by FOTOHOF to develop new perspectives on the city and its surrounding area, which is frequently photographed by tourists, under the working title »The City as a Pretext for Contemporary Photography«. The results of this call are combined with a selection of historical photographs to create a dialogue that not only relates (Salzburg-related) motifs from the 19th century to contemporary works but also raises various questions about the reception and impact of photographs, curatorial and artistic practices, the handling of images, and the role of authorship in photographic processes.” (Martin Hochleitner)
