Edited by Giulio Bizzarri and Paolo Barbaro
Preface by Geoff Dyer
Biographical text by Gianni Celati
In collaboration with the Fondazione Luigi Ghirri

The volume presents the complete transcription of the lectures given by Luigi Ghirri at the Università del Progetto in Reggio Emilia between 1989 and 1990. The lecture texts are accompanied by the visual materials used in the classroom, including works by Ghirri and references drawn from the history of photography and art. As Geoff Dyer writes, Ghirri's work has an almost universal effect on anyone who encounters it: an initial enthusiasm for his images deepens, with more exposure, into a lasting conversion. Gianni Celati recalls that for Ghirri every kind of photograph was part of a single alphabet, running from Walker Evans and Eugène Atget to André Kertész and the circle around Nadar, to innovators such as Moholy-Nagy and Muybridge; in Reggio Emilia he did not teach photography as an art separate from everything else, but as belonging to an alphabet connecting different habits of seeing, in which one recognises an inhabitable world.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
