Olivo Barbieri's project takes its cue from Giorgione's Tempesta to explore, through colour and light, the contemporary landscape of the Veneto region. The Renaissance painting becomes for Barbieri both a key to interpretation and a starting point for a journey that extends from the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice to the mainland, through landscapes marked by historical, architectural and industrial stratification — from Carlo Scarpa's Brion Tomb in Altivole, to Antonio Canova's Gypsotheca in Possagno, to Villa Parco Bolasco and the Museo Casa Giorgione in Castelfranco. Barbieri alternates wide views and minimal details, weaving together pictorial citations and observations on the present. The project investigates the transformations of the territory of north-eastern Italy: warehouses, historic architecture, and natural and urban landscapes engage with the artistic memory that runs from Giorgione to Veronese. For Barbieri, photography is a laboratory in which painting, architecture and science converge; what matters is not only the object represented but the way the gaze itself is constructed. The publication presents thirty-two previously unpublished works, accompanied by critical contributions broadening the reflection on colour, landscape and territory.
