Subtitle: Comprendere le immagini della distruzione degli ebrei

A polyphonic account of the Shoah and a reflection on how we understand historical images. In selecting the photographs, the author has favoured those that seemed most significant, original and pertinent to a narrative that unfolds like a score for several voices, adopting an integrated approach that keeps distinct the different perspectives, roles, responsibilities and destinies of the subjects of history. Some images in the book are well known, already seen and reproduced many times, yet perhaps never interpreted with sufficient depth, partly because their media overexposure has over time emphasised their symbolic value at the expense of their historical one; many others are almost unknown or unpublished in the Italian context. The book uncovers what lies behind these photographs, concerning the people photographed, the photographers and everyone else present on the scene, in order to better understand the relationships between them, their spheres of action and responsibility: a crucial question, given that the history of the Shoah has been narrated almost exclusively from the point of view of the Nazi persecutors, using their own representations.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
